I AM a huge fan of Japanese food.
And when I got I got a welcome for an alternative Burns dinner at YO! I was sceptical to day the least.
However I am here to inform you it works.
The ever innovative minds at Irn-Bru have actually partnered with everybody’s preferred conveyer belt sushi brand name to develop a Scottish blend menu in time for Burns Day, which falls this Saturday.
A couple of unique meals will be offered to restaurants in Scotland – in addition to a number of dining establishments south of the border – for a month.
The concept is that regardless of one in 7 Scots taking pleasure in haggis, a 5th do not commemorate Burns Night since it feels ‘too conventional’.
And I got the possibility to head along and attempt the completely non-traditional take on the staple dinner.
For the occasion, the entire dining establishment was dressed up in the familiar Bru orange with cans of Scotland’s preferred carbonated beverage twisting their method around the conveyer belt.
There was a DJ playing a suspicious mash up of difficult beats and Highland dancing tunes.
And a fantastic young artist – Kirsteen Harvey -did an unexpected modern-day take on Burns’ Address to a Haggis, to the tune of Sabrina Carpenter’s Espresso.
However the genuine occasion was the food.
First off we attempted teriyaki haggis nigiri. Little cubes of sticky rice were deep fried then topped with collapsed haggis and glazed with teriyaki sauce, mayo and sesame seeds.
This was a yummy combination with the soft haggis completely matching the crispy rice.
Next up was haggis and prosciutto sushi rolls. The haggis was encloses, together with with red onions, teriyaki and carrot, in rice before being covered in prosciutto.
I enjoyed the flavour of this one however wasn’t such a fan of the texture.
Lastly, was the star of the program, in my viewpoint – haggis katsu curry.
Katsu is among my preferred Japanese meals and I love the more conventional verison with chicken or veg.
However this Scottish variation is a discovery. The bread-crumbed, peppery haggis was incredibly delicious along with the moderate curry sauce.
No Burns dinner is total without neeps and tatties and Yo’s variation was their traditional french fries and pumpkin korokke with tonkatsu sauce, the latter being my preferred thing on the dining establishment’s entire menu.
All in all this is a seriously delicious twist on the staple dinner – and I ‘d motivate any haggis fans to get along while the unique menu is on deal.
